Most of the android users are familiar with the famous MX Player. It’s is the best video player trusted by many users. It’s one of the highest rated video playback apps on the Play Store, with a tremendous 100 million to 500 million downloads. It has been aquired by Indian Media company Times Internet For $200 million, according to The Ken (Paywall).
MX Player was developed by J2 Interactive, which doesn’t seem to have much of a presence online. So far neither the MX Player site nor the official MX Player forum at XDA has been updated to reflect any of this information.
Times Internet is reportedly paying a mighty $200 million for the app. The Ken further states that TIL will very likely change MX Player into more of a video streaming platform rather than keep operating it as a standalone media player app.
Times Internet has a huge presence on web and app ecosystems in India with a slew of properties ranging from those built in-house to those acquired – CricBuzz, for example.
Seeing as there is likely to be a big surge in this category in India with the entry of Jio TV late last year and other options, Times’s acquisition is largely about acquiring users in addition to the name of MX Player.
MX Player is incredibly widespread. The Pro version is the #2 top paid app in the Video Players & Editors category on Google Play, and it’s #18 in the same free category. If the news is to be believed, we’ll just have to wait and see what Times Internet’s plans for the app might be or if the original developers will be involved after the sale, as there aren’t any details about the acquisition released just yet.
As soon there is an update we will update this post.
